Refurbished Ward 2K to enhance comfort and healing

Refurbished Ward 2K to enhance comfort and healing Sandra Miller and Carla Vidal tell us all about the newly refurbished Ward 2K.
13/08/2025
The recent reopening of Ward 2K, our dedicated voluntary mental health unit, marks a new era in patient-centred mental health care delivery at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS)

Following a thoughtful and much-needed refurbishment, the updated space has been designed to enhance comfort, dignity and healing for our patients and staff alike.

Bearing the Noongar name – Bidi Kwop Kaadadjiny, which means ‘Path/journey to good thinking’, the reopening and refurbishment of Ward 2K will support the continued high-quality care that EMHS is renowned for.

Watch this video to see the beautiful new space and hear from EMHS Executive Director of Mental Health Sandra Miller, Ward 2K Nurse Unit Manager Carla Vidal as well as Sandie, Chair of the EMHS Lived Experience Advisory Group.

The refurbishment brings significant improvements for our consumers, including a dedicated treatment room optimising comfort and safety, and bedrooms with ensuites that offer greater privacy.

Contemporary soundproofing has been incorporated throughout clinical and private spaces, ensuring confidentiality while providing a peaceful environment for consumer and staff interactions. Consumers will benefit from revitalised communal areas, with the lounge, dining spaces, and quiet room all featuring new vinyl flooring and contemporary colour themes, while offering enhanced safety.

This transformation brings meaningful benefits for consumers, staff and all those who share this space. The upgrades have been designed with a clear purpose – to provide a safe, low stimulus, and supportive space for recovery, while also supporting our staff to deliver the highest standard of care.
