Radiology Fellowships
The Royal Perth Hospital radiology department offers multiple fully supervised fellowship training positions, including fellowships in chest imaging, abdominal imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, Women’s imaging, and Interventional Radiology.
Fellows are encouraged to participate in daily registrar teaching sessions, attend and sometimes lead weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, and participate in morbidity and mortality meetings. A research component to each fellowship is strongly encouraged.
As a Level 1 Trauma Tertiary Hospital, a 24 hour radiology service is provided and all trainees and fellows participate in the roster and are remunerated generously for on-call and overtime.

Thoracic imaging
Supervisor: Dr Kay-Vin Lam
Servicing the tertiary thoracic imaging requirements for the East Metropolitan Health Service of our city, the fellowship includes extensive experience diagnostic and interventional thoracic radiology, working closely with the RPH Department of Respiratory Medicine.
High volume chest radiograph reporting experience is expected. The fellowship will involve supervised reporting of a high volume of Thoracic subspecialist CT imaging including interstitial lung diseases (ILD), pleural diseases, thoracic malignancies, airways disease, smoking-related lung disease and pneumoconiosis.
Participation in weekly Respiratory multidisciplinary team meetings is expected – these teams include thoracic oncology, ILD, respiratory infectious diseases, pathology review, lung immunology and lung nodule services.
The RPH thoracic imaging interventional opportunities include: CT guided intervention in lung/ pleura / mediastinum, ultrasound guided diagnostic and therapeutic thoracic procedures, and CT guided thermal ablation of tumours. Statistically, RPH typically performs the highest number of such procedures per annum in Australia (for a single site). Thoracic fellows with some interventional experience will have opportunity to further their skills in this area under supervision.
Abdominal Imaging:
Supervisor: Dr Padmini Hewavitharana
Providing abdominal imaging services for East Metropolitan Health Service, the Abdominal Imaging fellowship provides the opportunity to work with experts in a range of abdominal imaging subspecialty areas.
The fellowship will include supervised reporting of a range of abdominal imaging modalities.
The fellowship will provide training in oncology imaging, advanced multimodality liver imaging, rectal MRI, and multiparametric prostate MRI.
Home to the State Adult Trauma Centre, Royal Perth Hospital sees more than 1000 major traumas per year and imaging is central to patient care. The fellowship will require close interaction with the trauma team.
A wide range of abdominal and vascular ultrasound is performed, including contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging, endoscopic ultrasound, gynaecological ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound studies.
The fellowship will include training in a range of ultrasound and CT guided biopsy techniques, as well as CT abscess drainage techniques.
Multiple abdominal imaging related MDTs are held at Royal Perth each week, including general surgical, upper GI, colorectal, urology and trauma MDTs. The fellow is encouraged to actively participate in these meetings.
The fellow will be expected to conduct at least one audit or research project during their fellowship.
Musculoskeletal imaging:
Supervisor: Dr James Hodgkinson
Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) is a 450 bed Level 1 Trauma Tertiary Hospital based within the Central Business District of Perth. It is the oldest hospital in Western Australia. RPH is one of the busiest Trauma Centres in Australia and accounts for more than 80% of all trauma cases in Western Australia.
The Radiology Department contains both a 1.5T and 3T MRI with multiple CT modules located within the Radiology Department, Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit. Volume of MSK MRI exposure would be equivalent to similar Public Tertiary Hospitals but less than dedicated private Sports Radiology Centres as expected.
The Musculoskeletal Fellow would be expected reach a level of experience in reporting MRI in both acute and chronic MSK injuries along with chronic infection such septic arthritis and osteomyelitis.
The Musculoskeletal Fellow is encouraged to participate in the weekly State Sarcoma Soft Tissue MDT which is one of the most established Sarcoma Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings of its kind in Australia.
Interventional techniques include, but are not limited to, CT guides epidural injections, nerve root blocks and facet joint injection along with ultrasound guided sarcoma biopsies, corticosteroid injections to joints and soft tissues.
Reporting of Orthopaedic, Spinal, Plastic surgery and Podiatry outpatient clinics are included in the case load.
Fellowship in breast imaging and intervention
Supervisors: Dr Donna Taylor, Dr Deepthi Dissanayake
The RPH Breast Clinic is one of the busiest clinics of its type in Australia and provides the most up- to-date diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the management of breast disease.
Two radiologist-led full day BreastScreen Assessment Clinics are conducted per week, with a mixture of surgical and breast physician led clinics on the other days. A weekly surgeon-led dedicated high-risk clinic is also conducted, with 5 high risk screening breast MRI exams performed per week.
Our integrated multidisciplinary team consists of 7 consultant radiologists (subspecialists in breast imaging and intervention), 2 breast radiology fellows, 2 radiology trainees, three breast care nurses, 5 mammographers, 4 breast MRI MITs, three subspecialist breast surgeons, four breast physicians, physiotherapist, dedicated breast pathologists and a clinical psychologist.
The surgical workload includes open diagnostic biopsies, breast conserving surgeries, mastectomies, breast reconstruction.
The breast imaging workload includes mammograms, breast ultrasound, contrast enhanced mammograms, breast MRI, biopsies, and preoperative lesion localisation procedures.
Our unit has an extensive array of the latest equipment including GE and Hologic full field digital mammography, tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced mammography units, Siemens 3T Skyra and 1.5T SolaFit MRI units, GE ultrasound units, a Hologic Affirm prone tomosynthesis biopsy table, Hologic Eviva and BD Enspire vacuum biopsy units.
In addition to performing routine mammographic studies, the RPH Breast Clinic performs diagnostic awork-up views (tomosynthesis and magnification), contrast enhanced mammograph, breast ultrasound and Breast MRI.
Fellows gain hands-on expertise in performing breast ultrasound studies (as these exams are performed by registrars, fellows and consultants rather than sonographers).
Training in procedural work includes biopsies with 14G and 9, 10, 12 G vacuum assisted devices using in plane and horizontal arm techniques, contrast enhanced mammographic biopsy, 7G vacuum assisted excision of selected breast lesions, 9G vacuum assisted MRI guided biopsy, abscess drainages and pre-operative localisation of breast lesions and axillary lymph nodes using MagSeed and Hook-wire.
During their time with us, fellows will be expected to present at weekly multidisciplinary meetings) and to conduct at least one audit or research project culminating in submission of a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Interventional Radiology:
Supervisor: Dr Rory McPherson
Royal Perth Hospital provides a 24/7 Interventional Radiology service. Interventional radiology provides trauma related procedures, hepatic and biliary procedures (including hepatic radioembolisation and chemoembolisation), hepatic and renal ablation procedures (microwave and radiofrequency ablation) including percutaneous imaging guided ablation and intraoperative ablation, urological procedures, vascular access management, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions, adrenal vein sampling, biopsies, and drainage procedures.
Home to the State Adult Major Trauma Centre, which treats over 1000 major traumas every year, interventional radiology provides a critical support service. Fellows are exposed to high level interventional trauma care.
Weekly multidisciplinary meetings include Vascular, HCC, general surgery, upper GI, and urology meetings. Active participation is encouraged.
The Interventional Radiology fellow is always supervised by a consultant interventional radiologist.
The fellow will be expected to conduct at least one audit or research project during their fellowship.
