Photo of the Spinal Department 2023The State Spinal and Scoliosis Service comprises the Spinal Injuries Unit and the Scoliosis/Spinal Deformity Unit.  This is based at Royal Perth Hospital which is Western Australia's level 1 trauma centre.

There are currently five sub-specialised fellowship-trained orthopaedic spinal surgeons accredited to this service; Dr Peter Woodland (Head of Spinal Surgery), Dr David Dillon, Dr Ed Baddour, Dr Farhaan Altaf and Dr Siamak Seresti. Other members include spinal fellows, specialised nursing staff, allied health staff, accredited training registrars and interns.

Our team of surgeons participate in the State Spinal Injury Service providing 24 hours per day, 7 days per week state-wide cover.

In 2022 a total of 755 spinal and scoliosis patients were admitted under the Spinal Service with approximately half of these patients admitted with spinal injuries and 51 patients were admitted with spinal cord injuries. In addition, the Spinal Service provides advice regarding the management of many other spinal injured patients within the Royal Perth Hospital system and throughout the State and has close collaboration with the Adult State Trauma Unit, also based at Royal Perth Hospital.

The Service offers comprehensive management of scoliosis/spinal deformity and degenerative spinal conditions with weekly clinics at the Royal Perth Hospital Goderich Street Outpatient Facility and with multiple operating sessions for related surgeries.

Members of our department are actively involved with research, medical student and registrar training activities.
